March 25th - March 30th, 8:00pm
Every semester at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, students have the opportunity to propose a show to produce. When approved, the team gets the opportunity to put on a completely student-run show.
As part of the Spring 2013 Gap season at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, we are presenting In the Heights.
About In the Heights
In his closing night speech on Broadway, composer & lyricist Lin Manuel Miranda promised in a hushed voice “But listen, In the Heights ain’t closing…it’s spreading.” His confidence in the continued life of this musical came from his faith that it’s story, about the search for dreams and the power of community, was one that could touch the heart of any audience member across the globe. This story was what drew me to In the Heights as a director. In the play’s tight Washington Heights neighborhood, each character is chasing a dream, seeking out who they truly are and where they belong, and it is through one another that they discover their own stories. As NYU drama students, we live a life of dreaming—imagination is both our tool at work, and what gives us faith when remaining an artist gets tough. My goal with this production is to bring everyone: cast, creative team, designers, musicians, and audience into the play’s Washington Heights community.
In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which tradtions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
